Continuous engagement between acute hospitals & nursing homes imperative with season Winter approaching

Minister & HSE must focus on timely discharges back into the community

19th October 2018

Nursing Homes Ireland today, 19th October, stated continuous engagement between acute hospitals and nursing homes is imperative as we approach Winter season in order to avoid older people experiencing prolonged delays in our A & E departments. It comes as a report today states 10,000 patients aged 74 + have endured a full day or longer on a trolley in our A&E departments so far this year.

NHI’s most recent bed availability survey (September 2018) informs two-thirds of private and voluntary nursing homes have bed availability, with approximately 1,200 beds being available within 300 of such homes across the country.

Tadhg Daly, NHI CEO said: “Our health service providers must engage in meaningful, consistent engagement with nursing homes across the country in order to achieve optimum outcomes for older people who are availing of care in acute hospitals. Private and voluntary nursing homes are essential to meet specialist healthcare needs, with almost 9,000 people transferring from our acute hospitals to such nursing homes for transitional care last year. We are engaging with HSE management across the country to impress upon them the vital importance of timely discharges from acute hospitals into nursing home care, where appropriate. Day-to-day engagement between staff responsible for discharges and nursing homes is imperative. Timely action by such staff will ‘free-up’ beds within our hospitals and ensure older people are provided with care in the community that is most appropriate to their needs. We must ensure for older people who have completed their treatment within the acute hospital that their dignity and respect is upheld through timely discharge into the community to their own home or to a nursing home, where appropriate.”
