NHI reiterates importance of continuous engagement between acute hospitals & nursing homes during Winter season

Specialist care provided by nursing homes can facilitate timely discharge of older patients from our acute hospitals

31st October 2018

Nursing Homes Ireland today, 31st October, reiterates continuous engagement between acute hospitals and nursing homes is imperative to ensure older people completing their acute phase of care are discharged in a timely manner back into the community via nursing home care, where appropriate. The INMO today states 2018 has seen the worst October on record for hospital overcrowding.

NHI’s most recent bed availability survey (October 2018) informs the average bed availability per private and voluntary nursing home is 2.8 beds. The snapshot survey encompassed 99 nursing homes. This indicates circa 1,200 beds are available across the country within private and voluntary nursing homes. The HSE Performance Reports inform on a consistent basis two-thirds of the hundreds of patients classified as ‘delayed discharges’ within our aute hospitals are awaiting long-term nursing care.

Tadhg Daly, NHI CEO said: “It is incumbent upon our health service to ensure older people who have completed their care in our hospitals are enabled to transition back into their communities in a timely manner. Beyond the traditional long-stay care, private and voluntary nursing homes have an essential role to fulfil in meeting older peoples respite, rehabilitative and transitional care needs. Last year, around 750 people every month were funded by the HSE to avail of transitional care within these dedicated healthcare settings.  We are engaging with the Department of Health and HSE management to discuss the imperative requirement this Winter for our acute hospitals to promptly identify if a person’s care needs can be better met within a nursing home and to ensure measures are in place to facilitate a timely discharge. Close, day-to-day engagement between acute hospital management and our nursing homes at local level is critical to ‘free-up’ beds and facilitate effectiveness in healthcare delivery. Nursing homes present specialist yet homely healthcare settings where expert, round-the-clock care can improve the health and the wellbeing of person requiring care.”
