Advocating Equality in Fair Deal - TDs and Senators to be pressed to publish Fair Deal Review

Representatives from private and voluntary nursing homes will meet with TDs and Senators tomorrow, Wednesday 20th June, to outline the challenges being presented in providing nursing home care. Nursing Homes Ireland will host its annual Oireachtas Open Day at Buswell’s Hotel, opposite Leinster House. The Oireachtas Open Day is being hosted during Nursing Homes Week, the annual celebration and promotion of nursing home care.

Tadhg Daly, NHI CEO said: “NHI representatives from urban and rural nursing homes are looking forward to engaging with Oireachtas Members. At the Open Day we will present the great inequity within the Fair Deal scheme. HSE nursing homes are being paid fees per resident that are 60% above those payable to their private and voluntary counterparts. This glaring anomaly and discriminatory practice in care of the older person must be addressed. We will be calling upon TDs and Senators to press for publication of the review of the Fair Deal pricing mechanism, which is now delayed a year. Publication of the review can facilitate an important discussion regarding the funding of the care needs of persons requiring nursing home care. Persons availing of nursing home care, whether HSE, private or voluntary, must be supported by a funding model and fees payable that recognise the true costs of providing high-dependency, 24/7 specialist care. Furthermore, the crisis presenting in the recruitment of healthcare assistants will be advanced. Removal of the role of healthcare assistant from the ineligible categories of employment for employment permits listing on a controlled basis can fulfil a lead role in alleviating the crisis presenting within healthcare.”
