1,400+ beds available in nursing homes to facilitate timely discharges from acute hospitals

NHI urges HSE, Department of Health & Minister to ensure close engagement between acute hospital management & local nursing homes

Nursing Homes Ireland has urged close, ongoing engagement between acute hospital management and nursing homes to alleviate overcrowding within our acute hospitals. A survey undertaken by NHI in the lead-up to Christmas informed of circa 1,400 beds being available within private and voluntary nursing homes in communities across Ireland. 183 nursing homes participated in the survey, informing of 610 beds being available to meet not just long-term but also short-term, respite, rehabilitative, and transitional care requirements of persons being discharged from hospitals. Replicated across the 430 private and voluntary nursing homes operating across the country, this would entail over 1,400 beds being available.

Tadhg Daly, NHI CEO stated: “It is essential the capacity of nursing homes within the community is fully realised to facilitate timely discharges from our acute hospitals.  Nursing homes are dedicated healthcare settings with teams of specialist health and social care personnel, including teams of nurses and carers, positioned to provide short-term care that can enable hundreds of timely discharges from acute hospitals back into the community. The recently published HSE Service Plan 2018 has advanced “management of bed capacity within acute hospitals is challenged by the large number of delayed discharges”. Nursing homes are primarily positioned to support the HSE in addressing the high numbers of persons delayed discharged within our hospitals. Beds are available across the country, with teams of specialist personnel positioned to provide 24/7 care on a transitional or long-stay basis. We urge Minister Harris and his Department to ensure HSE management within our acute hospitals are actively engaged with nursing homes to alleviate pressures within our acute hospitals.  NHI engaged with the HSE in the lead-up to Christmas to inform of bed availability across the country and further engagement is being undertaken during this period of severe overcrowding.”
